Robert Murphy
Superintendent of Highways, Incumbent
St. James resident Robert Murphy has served as the Superintendent of Highways for the Town of Smithtown since early 2016. With over 25 years of civil engineering experience, Murphy has brought a strong sense of unity, teamwork, and pride to a workforce of over 130 employees. Under his leadership, the department has efficiently managed a multi-million-dollar operating budget while applying modern engineering principles to maintain Smithtown’s extensive infrastructure, which includes 470 miles of roads, drainage systems, recharge basins, driveway aprons, and curbs.
Prior to his tenure with the Town of Smithtown, Murphy worked as a capital project manager for Suffolk County’s Building and Engineering Department, overseeing large-scale public works projects. He also gained valuable experience in the private sector, working with renowned engineering firms such as Sidney B. Bowne & Son LLP and Cashin Associates.
Beyond his professional contributions, Murphy is deeply committed to giving back to the community. He is an avid supporter and regular fundraiser for The Parkinson’s Therapy Center, which operates in the fellowship hall of Smithtown United Church. The center provides essential services such as group exercise programs, functional exercises, individual therapy by licensed physical therapists, and a supportive space for socialization. Murphy’s philanthropic heart and dedication to this cause help ensure that individuals with Parkinson’s disease receive the care, therapy, and encouragement they need to maintain their quality of life.
Murphy’s extensive background in engineering and public works, combined with his commitment to excellence and passion for community service, has made a lasting impact on both Smithtown’s infrastructure and the well-being of its residents.
