St James resident Robert Murphy was appointed to his current title of Superintendent of Highways in early 2016. In the short time that he has lead the department, he has brought a sense of unity, teamwork and pride to an army of over 130 employees. Murphy has managed a multi-million dollar operating budget applying modern principles and concepts, and his 25 years of civil engineering experience to maintain 470 miles of roads, drainage systems, recharge basins, driveway aprons and curbs. Prior to his time working for the Town of Smithtown Robert Murphy served as a capital project manager for Suffolk County’s Building and
Engineering Department. He has also worked in the private sector for such prestigious fi rms as Sidney B. Bowne & Son LLP and Cashin Associates.
